Decommissioning fn835 Computing Systems
Remote access turn off Apr 1, 2002
Complete turn off Jun 2002
The initial questionnaire sent Dec 28,
2001 with a deadline of Jan 18, 2002.
The responses received by Jan 18, 2002:
The powerpoint file for Keith's presentation
at the March 2, 2002 collaboration meeting.
Result(s) of discussions at March 2, 2002 collaboration
meeting and a smaller meeting March 3.
Will copy as much of the 250GB fn835 to FNAL AFS space which is accessible
from everyone's fnalu account; disk space to be requested in the next few
The minimum move of ~50GB (see above presentation) will get done; the rest
will depended upon Keith's time and/or help
that he receives in organization of the FNAL AFS group account.
The official offline copy of source and libraries will move from fn835
to Ferrara; fn835s and some disk (all Italian purchased) will be shipped
to Ferrara after fn835 is shutdown. There will have to be a mechanism setup
to propagate official changes to the other universities.
Official copies of data sets and databases will be moved from fn835 to
FNAL AFS space (some of this is included in the minimum move of ~50GB).
All files will be put into a group account. All personal areas/files will
then become group owned. There may be a request to the collaboration to
clean-up their personal files after all final backups are performed and
prior to copying to FNAL AFS.
The msql (offline) database server will die with fn835; all universities
will have local copies and any future changes will be done via official
code routines and files. Ferrara is the last group to convert the offline
to use a "local" database copy; to be done in the next few weeks.
Larger data sets will be moved to the Enstore tape robot (available from
everyone's fnalu account) as time/manpower
Current front-end programs (IRIX flavor; for example dish reader and luminosity
program) may have to be re-compiled/made to work after being moved to FNAL
AFS as manpower permits. Nadia is looking
to see if the luminosity and acnet programs can be run elsewhere other than
the fn835 front-end systems.
FNAL Computing Division will setup a new web server for E835 serving certain
There can be no straight copy of the current web areas to the AFS served
space; manpower is needed to orgainze
the E835 web content.
The E835 specific search and forum functions currently on www-e835 will
need work to implement or be re-done
under the new web server.
The time table of access to fn835 systems remains unchanged.
Items not resolved:
Who (an individual or group of people) will
the FNAL AFS E835 group account?
the FNAL AFS E835 web area?
The manpower to help
make everything work.
FNAL Computing Division is providing the hardware and administative support
but will not do the organization of E835 files.
The people involved who become involved with any of the above work need
to probably be at FNAL, at least at the start, to interact with FNAL Computing
Division personnel and current fn835 administrators.
Unless ~1 person-months appears soon, there will be an interuption to the
web serving of E835 information. If no help comes forth, E835 could be without
web serving capabilities for months.
Anyone volunteering will need to contact the spokespeople and current fn835
administrators to establish the expectations and schedule.
A list of the priority that Keith has assigned to each set of files for transfer from FN835 to FNAL AFS.
